A BIOPHILIA DEVICE (2024)

Developed for Gentler Future's Festival

Presented May 2024 in Centro de Inovação da Mouraria (Lisbon, Portugal)

Research on Biophilia Toolkits.

A Biophilia Device (2024) is a wearable, itinerant laboratory designed to enable the production of biomaterials directly within natural environments. Conceived as a nomadic sculptural tool, the device allows users to engage in material processes - cultivating, transforming, and testing biological matter - on site, without reliance on industrial infrastructure.

Grounded in the biophilia hypothesis, the project reconnects craft, ecology, and experimentation through embodied practice. By situating material production in direct contact with local ecosystems, the device frames making as a form of ecological attunement rather than extraction. The body becomes both laboratory and mediator, activating material transformation through presence and use.

Positioned within an ongoing research into biophilia toolkits, A Biophilia Device explores how portable instruments can foster material independence and eco-empathy, treating biomaterial production as an artistic and ecological gesture embedded in place.
