INTERSPECIES BUREAUCRACIES (2023)
Part of Segundas na Z program
Presented Nov 2023 in Galeria Zé dos Bois (Lisbon, Portugal)
Research on Speculative Systems
Interspecies Bureaucracies is a speculative performative installation that examines empathy across human and more-than-human systems. The project takes the form of living sculptural entities composed of biomaterials, designed to shift between object, organism, and process over time.
Developed in collaboration with bioresources scientist Giovanna Martins and performers Catarina Rodrigues and Miguel Limão, the work unfolds through corporeal and sonic interactions that activate the sculptures as perishable performances. Rather than fixed artworks, the pieces operate as temporal negotiations between bodies, materials, and environmental conditions.
Situated within a broader inquiry into speculative systems, Interspecies Bureaucracies proposes the artwork as a site of interspecies protocol, where material decay, sound, and gesture become modes of communication beyond human-centered language.
